The traditional nuclear family paradigm seemed to work until the age of Enjoli, the advent of the civil rights movement in the sixties and Murphy Brown. It certainly was a combination of things which propelled woman into the daily grind that only men had the pleasure of facing. And today, ideology is mixed. Some couples choose to each pursue careers while raising a family and let a nanny take over the household duties while others prefer more traditional roles.
Yet, despite the acceptance of women in the work force and the two-career couple, it appears that women simply do not get the recognition they deserve. Two recent studies (Baxter, and Wright cited in Davis and Robinson 1063) had concluded that husbands and wives in the two wage earner group had relied mainly on information about the husband when placing themselves in a class structure. This is interesting and may suggest that despite strides made in terms of the equality of women, women still perceive themselves to be lesser than their husbands.
