For purposes of this research paper, this author should like to begin this research paper on hypertension with some background and thesis statement. Hypertension is the medical term for abnormally high blood pressure. The term indicates that a person’s blood pressure exceeds the upper limits most of the time. Hypertension is not synonymous with nervous tension, anxiety or over activity and florid complexion and hyperactive behaviors are not attributes of the hypertensive patient. Hypertension rarely causes symptoms until complications occur. Blood pressure fluctuates even in healthy individuals. High blood pressure results from an increased output of blood from the heart, an increased resistance to its flow through tiny branches of the arteries called arterioles, or both. Blood pressure, tested by an inflatable cuff that is wrapped around the arm is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm H g) and is expressed as systolic pressure over diastolic pressure.
