Without reading book, I think the problem of consciousness is that no one really knows if they are conscious or not because who can prove what is real and what is illusion? The problem with consciousness is that everyone has a different perception of what reality is and we all assume that if we are not asleep, we are conscious. Our mind works on the conscious level, and the subconscious landscape of our mind has stored images and memories and intuitions, as well as conspiracies, biases, fears, and contradictions that reflect on our conscious thoughts; thus creating a problem for the self as well.
