“A FEW BAD COPS, OR A PROBLEM WITH THE SYSTEM?”: AN ANALYSIS
The article, “A Few Bad Cops, or a Problem With the System?”, has largely to do with a case study in the Nassau and Suffolk police departments. To a large extent, I should like to state that overall, there are many problems which I have identified throughout this case study, and in turn, I believe may lead to recommendations and ultimately solutions, hopefully for the problems which exist among the police officers in question. At the same time, I believe that many of the problems that exist within the New York Times article at issue are being experienced by police departments around the United States. The author makes the point that the mid 1980s brought changes to the police entrance examinations. In the early 1990s came the first in a spiraling series of wage increases that attracted a flood of former New York City officers to the Long Island department. In the mid 1990s, rotating work schedules were changed to fixed hours on the day or night shifts.
