A DISCSSION AND ANALYSIS OF DRUG LEGALIZATION

The purpose of this research paper is to discuss the pros and cons of drug legalization at the outset; I should like to state that I should also like to propose an argument as to why drugs should be legalized. My argument is based upon several tenets which include drug legalization would have the benefit of increased tax revenues, it would allow the police to shift their resources; and, as well, I believe that drug related crimes would decrease. I believe that this would also offer a further alleviation to the already overburdened prison system throughout the United States. The cost to the taxpayers is enormous, and I believe that we must also consider the fact that constructing new prisons is big business. There are those in congress and in the lobbies who would like to see continue to build prisons, as well currently are, at a feverish pace. However, the so called “war on drugs” has never been a war in fact. It is like the war in Vietnam, our longest war in history.
