A DISCUSSION AND ANALSYSIS OF GREEK INDEPENDENCE FROM TURKEY
The purpose of this research paper is to discuss and assess Greek independence from Turkey. First, I should like to state that modern Greece came into being in 1830, following a war of independence against Ottoman Turkey. Initially much smaller than it is today, Greece acquired additional territory from Turkey as a result of the Russia-Turkish war of 1877-78 and the Balkan wars (1912-13). The Greeks and their fight against independence can be traced far back into history. As great as the preponderousness of the Persians over the Athenian power, it would be unjust to impute wild rationales to the policy of Miltiades and those who voted with them in the Athenian council of war, or to look on the after current events as the mere fortunate result of successful following. As has been remarked before, Miltiades, while Prince of the Chersonese, had been serviced in the Persian arm; and he knew by personal observation how many elements of weakness lurked behind their imposing aspect of strength.
