In a book, an author has a distinct advantage as it is possible for the writer to tell the reader what a major character is thinking and feeling. Generally, a playwright or a filmmaker tries to capture the subtle nuances of characterization, that is, what a character thinks and feels, through the interplay of dialogue, looks, and gestures in combination with the subtle manipulation of the elements of cinematography.
