Professor-Student Friendships

Number of Pages 4

College students are adults and many want to be ‘friends’ with their professors. How far can a professor go in these personal relationships before crossing the unethical line? One authors said these personal relationships can be very helpful for students and even for the professors but there are many pitfalls. In this case study, a female student goes to a professor's office every time he has open hours and stays a lot longer. One time, she suggested they carry on their conversation at a restaurant and he agrees. She drinks and pours out all her troubles. This essay uses the Koocher and Keith-Spiegel’s [ethical] Nine-Step Decision-Making model to analyze the case. Each of the nine steps is identified, discussed, and responded to. The essay ends with alternative decisions and the selected decision. There are two sources listed in the bibliography of this four page paper.
