In this paper of six pages Bluestone's essay is discussed as it considers trends predicted in 1958 in the text The Rise of Meritocracy, 1870-2033 by British sociologist Michael Young that class status would be based more on education, intelligence and experience than on family pedigree by the twenty first century. According to Bluestone inequality continues to exist in terms of education and earnings distribution and this paper contends that the global market economy make his proposed solutions implausible.
